CORNISH GLOBAL MIGRATION PROGRAMME
THE DIASPORA OF THE PEOPLE OF CORNWALL

DIASPORA DATABASE

We are developing an online searchable Cornish DIASPORA database. This collection of records is based upon different criteria to the MIGRATION database held in-house at Murdoch House. The main difference is that the DIASPORA  Database is based upon family trees whilst the MIGRATION database only includes records for individuals who were involved in the migration process.

At present the Migration Database records about 270,000 individuals, which is probably less than half of all Cornish born people involved in the Diaspora 9this database is not available on line). It will take us a massive amount of work  to adapt and transfer records to the Diaspora database!

Creating family trees for each migrant family is a vast task and it will take a long time to upload many of our records. There will be many people included in the diaspora version, for instance -  Ancestors (particularly parents & siblings), spouse who were not Cornish migrants, descendants (several generations) as well as the occasional families who had no Cornish connections but were intimately involved with Cornish communities overseas.

This Diaspora database is quite complex. For some migrants there is very little information, for others there are complex family trees. When available, images are included - from BMD records, census records, photographs, obituaries and such like. There are some family histories in the form of narratives and articles relevant to the migration process. Perhaps an interesting aspect you wil find on the Diaspora Database is the use of Reports.
